Youth

Lions Clubs have been involved in youth activities for many years and in Guildford we have supported many youth orientated activities over the years. We recognise the importance of youth in the community and our current youth activities include:

Peace poster - Presentations took place at St Peter’s School on 15th December in front of an audience made up of year 7 students.  The prizes were awarded to:

1st prize of £25 went to Lara Steer (St Peter’s School, Merrow)

2nd prize of £15 went to Ola Kolodziejczyk

3rd prize of £10 went to Catriona Morgan.

Lara Steer’s drawing has been forwarded to the next stage of the competition which is for entries from the south east.

Any school interested in entering the Peace Poster competition next year should contact us. There are prizes at each level leading, potentially, to the international winner visiting New York and the United Nations.

Youth football

SE Regional Final – Sadly I have to report that our team represented by the Meadow Sport Under 14’s lost to Corinthian FC 2 – 1.
It was a spirited game and could have gone either way with Meadow hitting the woodwork for incredible near misses a total of four times!

Meadow fielded a youtful team some of whom were outgrown by their Corinthian counterparts.  But the smallest of our team gave a good account of themselves keeping up with the best of the opposition.  The game was played on Pitch No. 2 of a very remote location attached to a local farm somewhere in Kent.  The conditions were generally good except for at least one of the floodlight units not working.  Spectators were assigned wooden benches which doubled for seats and standing -on platforms.

The first goal was scored by Corinthian but by the end of the first half, Meadow had equalized with an absolutely amazing free-kick from near the sidelines.  The second of Corinthian’s goals was scored by one of their giants from the right hand side of the field.
In conclusion, Meadow were not outplayed by any means but the night was not for them.

Travel awards – We have a limited budget to support students undertaking worthwhile foreign trips (eg Raleigh International, Girl Guiding, Boy Scouts)

Young Ambassador – David Daborn was chosen to represent Guildford in this national competition. David is a member of St John Ambulance and his bursary was used to buy a defibralator which he demonstrated to the Lions Club at one of our Business Meetings.

Anyone interested in getting support from the Club for youth activities should contact us.
